Incidents in Union Progresso

July 11 2000
From: Enlace Civil, A.C.>

In the community of Union Progreso of the Municipality of El Bosque of the State of Chiapas.

We are denouncing to National and International public opinion the events which took place today.

Today, July 10 of the year 2000, we are denouncing more precisely and clearly those incidents which took place regarding compañeros of the above-mentioned community.

Today, at approximately one in the afternoon, four of our compañeros, three of them adults and one seven year old child, were detained. They later released one of them, along with the child, and 2 others remained, who are now being detained by the public security detachment in Bochil. We are holding public security directly responsible for having detained our compañeros. The purpose and motive are unknown, as they were going to make purchases of goods and benefits for the community in order to meet its needs. Public security took advantage of the circumstances in order to seize them, as well as the vehicle, which belongs to the community. They removed the vehicle, which was full of goods. The whereabouts of the vehicle and the goods is unknown. Public security beat them, stripped them and removed their shoes, and they also left them unconscious and deprived of their liberty, the minor child as well. We are publicly denouncing the incidents against our community, since we are not guilty of anything, nor do we owe anyone anything. That is why we were are expressing our objection.

The detainees are: SALVADOR LO'PEZ GONZA'LEZ, MANUEL LO'PEZ GONZA'LEZ, and we are asking for their prompt release, since they have been deprived of their liberty.
