Harnessing the Internet

I was an "early adopter" of the Internet and in 1995 was one of the first designers in the Tampa Bay area to offer website design. Back then it was considered a great innovation to be able to add graphics to a web page and slow modem speeds were a major design criteria. Who could have imagined that only ten years later anyone would be able to upload their own movies onto the web – for free! By 1999 I was building data-integrated websites, first with Filemaker Pro and Lasso and later with SQL and ColdFusion. Criscenzo Creative, Inc. grew and thrived as one of the leading web-development businesses in the Tampa area.

Seeing the potential of data-driven web technology, in 1999 I started LocalO®, local online classified ads. The idea was similar to eBay but on a local level - a precursor of Craigslist.org. For a number of reasons, including lacking sufficient capital to market to an audience that was already conditioned to getting everything for free on the Web, and a sudden drop in web banner ad rates, the business model wasn't successful. My experience as webmaster and officer for a number of organizations inspired me to develop a business plan for an ASP (Application Service Provider) for organizations. The plan was one of three that was selected for TechVillage, a new Tampa incubator. In December 2001, I changed course for LocalO and offered a web-based system for association management - EasyMgr®. Again, under capitalization proved to be too big of a hurtle to take the business to the next level and I sold LocalO in December 2002.
